The new library in Gilcrest is being built and facilitated by revenue generated from the legally defined service area of the Platteville Public Library, which covers both Platteville and Gilcrest.
Platteville Public Library has been operating for over 100 years. We've had a building in town since 1932.
In 1987, PPL joined the Weld Library District (now called High Plains Library District), so that we could share our collection, resources, and Mill Levy dollars with a group of local libraries in exchange for computer and database services as well as courier support. Our library is governed by the town of Platteville, and is subject to its laws and ordinances. We have our own board of directors and staff to keep our building and collection running smoothly.
In 2011, Platteville Library director Dianne Norgren proposed to our board of directors that we open a second building in Gilcrest, CO to serve our patrons in that town. This was the start of an amazing idea and a somewhat serpentine journey through the necessities and formalities of building a public but not municipal library.
This project would not have been possible without so many people:
Dianne Norgren, Library Director
Tricia Patterson, Library Board President
Ellen Toomey-Hale, Library Board Vice President
Annette Price, Library Board Secretary
Karen Giardino, Library Trustee
Ricky Patterson, Library Trustee
Cassie Lawson, Library Trustee
Kelly Deitman, Architect (Halcyon Design, LLC)
Troy Renken, Platteville Town Administrator
Trudy Peterson, Gilcrest Town Administrator
Gail Odenbaugh, Gilcrest Town Clerk
Town of Platteville Board of Directors
Town of Gilcrest Board of Directors
Jeff Nelson, Gilcrest Mayor
All the folks at Growling Bear Co. (Inc)
